Formal notes: LS live longshot, PP preferred Play, BAL Bombs Away Longshot, BCL Boxcar Longshot, PS fits the Pro Simulcast spot play method. MA and MB are longshot spot play systems I've developed. MA is the Pace Shape method from my Pace Handicapping Longshots Book. POP is a Power Pace Figure pick based on the methodology in my book, Power Pace Handicapping.
Here are some winners that I picked for the Sharphorses Selection Service:
Sharphorses Selection Service Thursday, October 10
BEST BETS: KALIK 4th and BRISBANE 7th KALIK (PP) was wide against tougher from post 10 in last at Saratoga. The drop in class makes sense since he hasn't hit the board in all three of his starts this year and this owner/trainer combination put their horses where they can win. BRISBANE (LS) hasn't raced in a year and a half when she was racing in France but she's trained right along since July and makes her first start for top trainer Chad Brown. Jockey Manny Franco is getting first call on this barn's horses, with some of the other riders riding at Keeneland today, and he took this one over Brown's other 4yo french-bred filly, Venencia, who is a prime contender here after finishing a solid third against similar.
Saturday, October 5
BEST BET: FUNNY UNCLE 9th (scratched)
Sharphorses Selection Service Thursday, October 3
BEST BETS: FIRST GLIMPSE 3rd and DARK DEVIL 6th FIRST GLIMPSE (PP) always runs his race on dirt, takes a key drop for RRod, who has been cold recently, is probably dropping looking to get some wins, and this is a good spot for this gelding. DARK DEVIL (PP) ran well in all four of his starts and red-hot trainer Brad Cox drops him back to the level of the claim.
Sharphorses Selection Service Sunday, June 16
BEST BET: BATTLE OF NORMANDY 9th Race BATTLE OF NORMANDY (PP) made his first start of the year on April 30 but the race was switched to the main track. That was a throw out race but could have helped with his conditioning. He's run well against some good fields in his 9 race career, figures to fire second off the bench and back on turf, and picks up Flavien Prat for a Hall of Fame trainer.

BEST BETS: VENGE 6th and VALENZAN DAY 9th
VENGE (PP) hit the gate in his first start off the claim and didn't show his usual speed. Hot barn drops him down with a turnback to a sprint and he shows a good work since last.
VALENZAN DAY (LS) is 10-1 on the morning line but could be the favorite here. He was making his first start since July in last and he lacked a rally in a fast sprint against a tough field. He stretches out to the distance of his last win and drops into a realistic spot.

OUTLAW KID****, ROCKET'S RED GLARE, JAVA BUZZ, MATT DOYALE, STEADY ONE, UPPER LEVEL (3-2-12-11-4-9)
BEST BETS: THISMIGHTBETHEONE 3rd and OUTLAW KID 10th
THISMIGHTBETHEONE (LS) was much improved in her first two starts for Abreu then clipped heels in last. Picks up Prat, who has 4 wins in 7 starts for this barn and is riding superbly on turf this meet.
OUTLAW KID (BCL) gets the call at a big price in this wide open finale. Veteran trainer George Weaver is having a good year and a solid Saratoga meet. This nicely bred 3yo has a good speed/turf pedigree and looked good sprinting a 10 second furlong at the OBS sales last year and sold for $220,000. In his debut going about 5 furlongs on turf at Gulfstream in January, he prompted the pace and weakened. Obviously something went wrong because he comes back off an 8 month layoff, but they've gelded him and he's been working regularly since May and hasn't missed any of his weekly workouts so he comes into this with 12 works including 7 works on turf, two of which were bullets. The other horse that might be live at good odds here is MATT DOYLE (11). Like Outlaw Kid, this is a son of Violence, who is by the great Medaglio d'Oro. He has run four times, all on dirt, and he has never run a bad race. He is making his first start for Rudy Rodriguez today after transferring from the Chad Summers barn (several horses that left that barn won their next start). He gets lasix for the first time and tries grass for the first time. The only reason why I didn't spot him higher is the fact that he only has 5 works since he last raced in December, and I would have liked to have seen more works, but with his solid pedigree, the barn switch, first lasix, the move to turf, and the fact that he has most of best dirt speed figures in this race, he could be live at a price here.

MERCURIUS 5th
TIBERIUS MERCURIUS (BAL) 6
year old only has one turf win in his career but he was racing against tougher
in most of those starts and he's improved since moving into the Mike Maker bar
at the end of last year, going wire to wire in two mile and a quarter races on
synthetic, and turning in some decent efforts against tougher turf horses. Maker
dropped him into a $40,000 claiming race here last month, his softest spot in a
long time, and he forced the pace and lost by 3 lengths. He drops again and
stretches out and Luis Saez might be able to control this. The horse is beat is
DEVAMANI, who drops sharply for the leading barn.

RACE 1
11 GYPSY
10 SHEMAKESCENTS
9 WAKI WAHINE
13 BACKSTREET AFFAIR
3
GYPSY LYNN always fired
when she raced for a tag on turf, then tried dirt last time but they moved her
up to a MSW and she raced wide and okay. Kentucky bred drops down to her career
low off a two month freshening today...SHEMAKESCENTS comes off a game placing
against similar and looks like the one to beat for a sharp barn...WAKI WAHINE
chased a runaway winner in her debut last December then they dropped into a
$50,000 maiden claiming race going a mile on turf and she regressed. She returns
at the bottom going turf to dirt and adding lasix with a key rider change and a
good series of works and might be live at a price...BACKSTREET AFFAIR is on the
AE's but has to be considered if she draws in as high-percentage trainer adds
blinkers, drops her in for a tag for the first time, and adds the leading
rider...WARREN'S SHOW BIZZ is a plodding type who rallied to hit the board in
four straight races before being kept closer to the pace in last; can hit the
board.
Wednesday, July 27, 2022 - Good day at the Spa, 4 straight top winners including a $31.60 Top Winner keyed a lot of good paying exotics, 9 listed, Doubles ($77.00, $65.00, $21.00, $91.00, Cold $89.50, Cold $12.40, Cold $8.60) - Pick 3's ($737.00, $275.50, $265.00, $295.00, $201.50, Cold $133.00, Cold $48.80) - Exactas ($30.40, $7.60, $47.00) - Pick 4 ($916.50 for 50 cents!) - Pick 5 ($4025.23 for 50 cents!) - Best Bet, Messidor, won and paid $9.10.

MESSIDOR (PP) made a nice middle-moved in the Perfect Sting stakes last start and held well; 4yo filly has improved steadily for Clement and seems in career form now.
On Saturday, August 8, 2021, $14.60 Top Winner in the 1st, $23.40 Top Winner in the 2nd, Cold $147.50 Early Double, Cold $351.00 Pick 3 in first three races

BEST BETS: PREDICTED 5th and WAR LIKE GODDESS 7th
PREDICTED (BAL) is a well bred homebred by Tapit out of a good producing broodmare and one of her foals was a GR1 winning 2yo. Veteran trainer Tony Dutrow is having a good year and even though he hasn't been winning with firsters lately, he's won with plenty during his training career. Upset call in a wide open 2yo maiden race.
WAR LIKE GODDESS (PP) has shown a powerful stretch kick and looks like a good single here, albeit at a short price.
On Friday, July 23, I put my Saratoga picks on the free page and had a big day with a nice $10.20 Best Bet, Judge N Jury, that won easily.

SARATOGA |
BEST BETS: JUDGE N JURY 8th and ARTYISTHEPARTY 10th
JUDGE N JURY (LS) broke his maiden at 6.5 furlongs going wire to wire over this track last September but pulled up lame after the race and hasn't raced since. He returns as a gelding with first time lasix and a good foundation of works for a trainer who is off to a good start this meet and has a high win percentage with layoff horses.
ARTYISTHEPARTY (BAL) earned good pace figures sprinting in her first two starts then was stretched out to a mile on turf and left alertly but was wrangled back and was hard to rate, pulling her rider Jose Lezcano. She was 5 wide on the turn and hung in there pretty well until the final eighth. The turnback to a sprint makes sense and it's a good sign that Lezcano rides back. Her sire, grandsire, and her dam's sire are all doing well producing turf winners this year and her pedigree is speed oriented. This is the spot where we should see her best try.
Sunday, our top pick in the 8th race won and paid $48.20.

BEST BETS: MACHO BOY 3rd and MANDATORY PAYOUT 4th
MACHO BOY (PP) is the only one that's had the lead here, drops after being gelded and may hang on.
MANDATORY PAYOUT (LS) raced against a speed bias in both of his starts since being claimed by trainer James Ryerson, who's having a good meet. In both starts he rallied gamely including a good try against a tougher field two back. They try a stretch out to a mile here and at this point in his career, this gelding may be ready for the added distance. The jockey change to Franco is a plus.

BEST BET: REJECTED AGAIN 8th Race
REJECTED AGAIN (BAL/MA) set a fast pace from the rail over a sloppy track in last and tired badly. Trainer Gary Gullo gave him two months off to regroup, he drops down in price and fits my Pace Shape longshot angle.

AQUEDUCT |
BEST BETS: COUNTRY GRAMMER 8th and DEJA RACONTE 10th
COUNTRY GRAMMER (BAL) looked good and showed a long stride at the two year old in training sales and sold for $450,000; they put him in a turf route to start his career on Oct. 5 and he raced three or four wide throughout and lost by 2 lengths. This son of Tonalist is better bred for dirt and has a chance at a price stretching out on dirt for trainer Chad Brown, who is having another huge year.
DEJA RACONTE (BAL/MA) made her debut at this level, broke slow and was 11th at the start call, then rushed up to prompt a :21.2 first quarter, pressed the pace three and four wide and only lost by 2 1/4 lengths in a solid effort and was claimed by Steve Klesaris, who's having a good year. He was able to get a top jockey, Lezcano, for this spot and this filly has a chance at a price.
On September 15, 2019, my Best Bet paid $38.80 keying a COLD $178.00 exacta in the 9th race and a COLD $170.00 Late Double (Banana Chief became my top pick after scratches). The 50 cent Pick 5 paid $10,271.50 and I had all 5 winners either first or second in my picks.

BEST BET: MONTATHAM 4th (turf or dirt)
MONTATHAM (LS) broke slow from post 1 over a sloppy sealed track in his debut back in May and he didn't appear to handle the track well while racing greenly and climbing. He's put in a lot of works since that start, drops in for a tag, and switches to turf for a sharp trainer who does well 2nd time out. If the race is switched to the main track the track should be fast and he's still my top pick on a fast dirt track.
Sunday, July 21, 2019
SARATOGA |
BEST BETS: BORRACHO 10th and RIENDO 12th
BORRACHO (PP) is a 3yo facing older here but this colt has developed rapidly the last few months and comes off a sharp effort against GR1 sprinters. His workouts continue to be strong and he takes a key drop here.
RIENDO (LS) has been much-improved since the barn change in April and he's been facing some fields that were tougher than this one. Last start he was a bit anxious from his outside and the jockey sent him to the lead and he weakened late going a mile and an eighth; two back he had some traffic problems but finished third in a fast key race behind an impressive winner who has been claiming the ladder. He gets a key rider change here and a nice post and should run well in this weaker field.

HOMEFIELDADVANTAGE was bumped hard and lost ground at the start, finished gamely to run third a length behind while rallying off a slow pace in a one mile turf race. Makes second start off the layoff, gets more ground to work with, and there appears to be more pace in this race...ARTISTIC QUALITY rallied to finish 2nd in last two starts...GOOD BUSINESS bumped with Homefieldadvantage and also got off slow in last; she is nicely bred for turf for a very good turf trainer and may be primed for best in third lifetime start; chance at a price...ORAGEUSE stalked and disputed the pace going a mile and held well in first local start.

I had a huge day on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at Belmont. I've been using my new Real Time Handicapping Program more (hasn't been released yet), and it indicated that True Yankee had a big pace advantage in the 9th race. I made True Yankee a Best Bet and she went wire to wire winning easily and paid $21.20. I had the late double COLD for a whopping $306.50, and the late pick 3, which I had listed (two on top, Hoboe was my third pick), and the late Pick 3 paid $3,522 for $2.00. Coltandmissippit paid $11.00 in the 2nd, and once again, Real Time helped me pick that double-digit winner. In the 8th I had Pacific Gale ($18.00) on top. In this race, Real Time had Kathyrn The Wise on top, but she hadn't raced in 16 months, and I felt that we had to take a shot against her. Pacific Gale was the top ranked horse on my Diamond System and was ranked 2nd on Real Time. I listed some of the Real Time Screen shots below.
In the Real Time Handicapping screen shot below, you can see that Coltandmissippi is ranked on top in 5 categories, Main Track Speed, Average Speed, Total Pace, Total Power, and Class. These are all unique ratings that I developed using brisnet's single data file. These numbers are not in the past performances. They are also new numbers, in other words, they are my own formula I created. All of these numbers are based on recent averages, not just one paceline. Total Power is more of a route number and this was a mile and a sixteenth turf race. Coltandmississippi left and sat second and won in the stretch, paid $11.00.
Real Time Handicapping
In this race, Pacific Gale had a strong Class Rating on my numbers, and was 2nd best on Total Pace. This was a 6 furlong sprint, so I have Total Pace the edge over Total Power in sprints. As I mentioned, Kathyrn The Wise hadn't raced in 16 months and went off at 1-2 odds. I knew that she would be overbet and you have to take shots against horses coming off of long layoffs like that. so Pacific Gale looked like the right longshot. She won and paid $18.00. Kathyrn The Wise was off the board. As I mentioned, Pacific Gale was also top ranked using my Diamond System program.
The screen shot below is the one that keyed my $21.20 Best Bet, True Yankee. This was a turf route one mile race and Total Power is the best rating for that type of race. Late Pace is also good. Here you can see that True Yankee has an 8 point advantage on Total Power, a 7 point advantage on Late Pace, is ranked 2nd on Average Speed, and is ranked first on Pace Prime, which is the brisnet Prime number adjusted for pace (again, my own formula). True Yankee looked so good on Real Time Handicapping that I made her my Best Bet. I can honestly say that if I had just been using the past performances, there is no way I would have picked True Yankee to win because she is by Munnings, who is a speed horse, and this was a one mile turf race. But, the problem with handicapping off of past performances is that you tend to pick the obvious horses. That's why I spend so much time developing and testing these computer handicapping systems. I have the logic built in. The system shows that True Yankee will have the stamina to go a mile because it has the Total Power, which is a stamina type of rating. So I was not going to let my snobby pedigree bias push me off a longshot winner. I went with the system I developed. True Yankee went wire to wire and paid $21.20.

TRICKY ESCAPE (BAL) finished strongly to win last and handles these long distances well. She also ran well on yielding turf last fall and has a chance to upset here.
SIPPICAN HARBOR (LS) was well meant in debut but got into traffic problems; filly is well bred for dirt and an off track, upset call.

NOBLE INDY has a good closing kick and adds blinkers today after finishing two lengths behind the favorite; should be well placed...LONE SAILOR has shown flashes of talent and a strong closing kick; fought blinkers in his 3yo bow two back then finished strongly off a slow pace with the blinkers removed; has finished in front of Bravazo in the past and may go well at a price here...BRAVAZO has come back strong for Lukas and is two for two this year; figures to be setting the pace again from the rail for noted speed rider; one to catch...MY BOY JACK had a good inside trip in last but you have to respect the way he finished as he won going away; be closing.
Saturday, September 10
Sunday I gave out three Best Bets, they all won, $7.40 and $6.80 at Los Alamitos, and $13.20 at Belmont (cold $46 exacta), where I had 5 winners on top. The two Power Pace picks at Los Al were based on the Speed And Stamina Spot Play method in my new book, Power Pace Handicapping. It took me about twenty seconds to pick those two winners.

Besides my Belmont picks Saturday I had one other pick, a nice winner at $13.20 Churchill Downs. Note that I had the $50.60 exacta cold and the trifecta at $263.80. You can see in the notes that American Roma fit two of my best angles, Pro Simulcast (PS) and the Pace Shape Method (MA) from my books, The Pro Simulcast Spot Play System and Pace Handicapping Longshots.
With Aqueduct canceled due to weather on Sunday, I had one pick, Capital Letters, who won easily and paid $7.80 and I had the $261.60 (for $2.00) trifecta plus the $61.20 exacta. It came out 3-2-7. This was a interesting race. The favorite, Cash King, was an Oklahoma bred who had raced well in return. But, then you had a Gulfstream Park shipper, Kentucky bred Capital Letters, shipping in for a barn that was having a strong meet, and Refer, a horse coming off a layoff for the powerful Zayat stable, who had raced in New York last year. Both figured to be getting a class break against the weaker stock at Tampa Bay. I settled on Capital Letters, who had solid works over the track, but I used Refer for 2nd and third in the trifecta on my own tickets, so I hit the trifecta. This was sort of a class play here because of the Oklahoma bred. Even though he was coming off a career best try over the track, I like to bet horses shipping in from top class circuits when they are sent to a secondary level track like Tampa Bay. It shows that the trainer wants to try to have the horse break its maiden without having to risk losing the horse in a maiden claiming race. It indicates that they still think the horse has some ability.

FEETS OF STRENGTH (LS) showed sharp in debut then broke a step slow in second start, middle-moved into a quick pace and evened out; stretches out for good barn, may be able to stride more comfortably in this one mile race and has a chance to steal it at a price.
PICTURE DAY (LS) was a sharp winner two back then ran okay against tougher multiple winner claimers in first start for new barn; drops back into a restricted claiming race and may go well at a price.
Another hot day on Sunday, this has been a great winter for my picks. Both of my Best Bets at Aqueduct won and at Oaklawn my Best Bet went off at 16-1, finished 2nd, and my top two picks completed a $73.40 exacta.

BEST BETS: ANNIE ROCKS 3rd and COLONEL JEN 4th
ANNIE ROCKS (LS) set a quick pace under pressure and fought back to regain the lead to win a big key race in her 2nd career start, which was at Tampa Bay. She was sold after that and makes her first start for a hot barn that's winning at 31%. I'll give her the call to upset Big Thrill, a Linda Rice returnee who looks like the one to beat.
COLONEL JEN (BAL) had the rail in second start and showed some
late foot; she is bred to run long, stretches out and may be worth a price in a
field that lacks a stand out.
I had another big day on Thursday at Aqueduct. Note that both Best Bets won and Alex The Terror (who fit my Pace Shape Method from my Pace Handicapping Longhsots book) won and paid $13.00, and I had the late double cold for $30.20.

LUNAR ROVER (PP) steps up sharp off a claim by a barn that does very well with its claims and seems well prepped for another strong effort.

BELMONT FULL-CARD PICKS |
BEST BETS: ZIGGY MOONDUST 3rd and BOSSY SARATOGA 4th
ZIGGY MOONDUST (PP) showed sharply improved speed over a muddy track in second career start going 7f and held well; shortens up and gets the edge over second-time starter Man Of Mystery, who appears to be the main rival.
BOSSY SARATOGA (LS) has improved sharply since moving to dirt, was close up chasing a blazing pace in last and held the show; nicely bred for an off track and may get the jump on main rival Wraith, who figures to be rallying from off the pace.
SARATOGA Full-Card Picks |
BEST BETS: SYNTAX 4th and DREAM SATURDAY 8th
SYNTAX (LS) ran twice in Ireland and faced two good fields as the winner of each of those races went on to repeat and one of them won twice against tougher; adds lasix for U.S. debut and I'd have to think that he's facing weaker here; upset call.
DREAM SATURDAY (BCL) set a quick pace against the bias in the slop at Gulfstream on a day when the track was favoring horses that rallied wide or stalked wide with the rail being dull, held gamely for the place; moves into live barn, gets a key rider change, and this improving colt may be live at a price.
Big day on Thursday, August 14, 2014, both Best Bets (Live Longshots) won and keyed multiple COLD Exotics, Pandy had a total of 10 COLD exotics, 4 Cold Doubles, 2 Cold Exactas, a Cold Trifecta, and three Cold Pick 3's. See below.
SARATOGA Full-Card Picks |
BEST BETS: BAR OF GOLD 5th and STORM PURSUIT 8th
BAR OF GOLD (LS) is well bred and training sharply for a capable 1ster barn and for owners who have won with a lot of first time starters in the NY bred ranks over the years.
STORM PURSUIT (LS) forced a hot pace on turf in first start off the claim, two back he went wire to wire over a tiring "muddy" closer's track; drops back to level of that win and picks up the leading rider while going from turf to dirt.
Sunday, July 7, I had three Best Bets, one spot play, a Live Longshot, at Los Alamitos, and two Best Bets at Belmont. Two of the three won including RUSTY ROAD, which paid $22.80 in the first race at Los Al, and keyed a COLD $39.60 exacta with the 1-2 favorite, a heck of a price in a 6 horse field. Rusty Road stalked the pace and got up gamely.
LOS ALAMITOS TB |
RACE 1
5 | RUSTY ROAD* | 5-2 LS |
6 | WRIGHTWOOD | 7-5 |
4 | NO DISHONOR | 9-2 |
With Hollywood Park gone thoroughbred racing has now shifted to Los Alamitos. So far the track has played fairly, especially in sprints, which is a good sign, but horses with good early speed and stalking ability appear to have an advantage in the two turn route races.
RUSTY ROAD chased a blazing pace in a quick sprint that was won by a sharp repeat winner and tired in his debut after flashing early speed; stretches out for Mandella and may be loose on the lead; upset call...WRIGHTWOOD has run 4 times and his speed figures have improved in every start; in his last start at Santa Anita he earned a superior figure that is much faster than par for this class. But, the colt broke slow in all four starts and was one-paced. Very much the one to beat though, because this is a weaker field than he's been facing...NO DISHONOR adds blinkers off the layoff and ran well in his lone two turn start on a fast track.
TONALIST comes off a visually impressive win in the GR2 Peter Pan stakes here at Belmont, but it was an off track. Sometimes off track efforts are hard to gauge, because some horses run faster on an off track. In the Peter Pan, Tonalist did not break well, then rushed up along an open rail and scooted to the lead. It was interesting because the track had been muddy earlier in day and was favoring outside paths and closers. That's why Tonalist was able to ride the rail, the other rider's were avoiding it. Tonalist moved boldly to the lead, established a quick pace and drew clear handily, earning a speed figure that is the fastest that any of these horses have run. In his prior starts, he looked like a horse with promise. He has only raced four times, and if he can duplicate his form over a fast track, he has a chance to upset for outstanding trainer Clement...MEDAL COUNT is an interesting horse. Coming into the Derby, he looked like an improving colt, but his form was on synthetic surfaces. In the Derby, Medal Count had an impossible trip. He was close up, shuffled behind a wall of horses, raced in tight quarters trying to find a clear lane, and then he appeared to be closing gamely when Danza literally crossed over right in front of him and cut him off badly, forcing jockey Albarado to take up. I think that Medal Count would have finished 3rd in the Derby if he hadn't been checked. His pedigree is very good for this distance, and he appears to be improving. Before the Derby, he worked 6 furlongs in 1:13. Before this race, he worked 6 furlongs in 1:10.3. Chance at a price...CALIFORNIA CHROME comes into this in top form. This idea that it's tough to race 3 times in 5 weeks is a bit of a misnomer. Prior to the Derby, California Chrome had a 4 week rest between starts, so this will actually be his 3rd race in 9 weeks, not grueling. He has essentially run the same race in his last 6 starts, all wins, so he's consistent, and he tries hard. But, with 12 starts under him, I think we've seen his best. Is that good enough to win the Belmont? Maybe, but, to me, there are two reasons why so many horses that won the first two legs fail in this race, and these are the reasons why I like to go against them. First of all, the mile and a half is a tough distance for most horses. When they get to the quarter pole, they've already raced a mile and a quarter, and many horses just slam on the breaks. Another big key, these stakes races for lightly-raced, young horses, are not like races for older horses. Some of these horses have not hit their peak. If you look at California Chrome, for instance, his best speed figure in his first 4 starts was 89, then in his 5th start, he ran a 101. It's not uncommon for a young horse to improve by 5 to 15 points in any one of its first 10 starts. Eight of these horses have raced 8 times or less! Anyone of them could step up and improve sharply. And, of course, Chrome will be a ridiculously short price in a race that is often won by huge longshots. If Chrome had won the Preakness by 10 lengths, I'd pick him here. But in his last two races, he looked good, but not dominating. Like everyone else, regardless of how I bet the race, I'll be rooting for him. I think the inside post forces Victor's hand, he has to leave the gate here, which may result in a less than perfect trip...RIDE ON CURLIN was my Preakness pick. He's a horse that appeared to be improving coming into the Preakness, and he ran a big race. If he runs that race again, he can upset. But, in recent years, horses that skipped the Preakness have been winning this race. Ride On Curlin may regress a bit here. If he doesn't, he has a chance. An interesting factor is the rider change to Johnny Velasquez. Ride On Curlin raced from off the pace in his last three starts, but he actually has the best early speed in this race. It would not shock me to see Johnny V try to steal it, or, at the very least, leave for position...COMMISSIONER is a grinding horse and sometimes these horses that are bred to run long upset in this race, simply by going at the same speed, then passing tired horses. This horse has the perfect pedigree for the Belmont stakes, and I mean, perfect. Look at his breeding. He is by a Belmont stakes winner, A P Indy. Both of his grandsires, Touch Gold and Seattle Slew, also won the Belmont, and his great, great grandsire is Secretariat, who ran the biggest Belmont ever!

I've had a strong Del Mar meet. Saturday, September 1, I had one pick at Del Mar and the first time starter was dead last until the final turn in a 5 1/2 furlong race, roared wide and flew home to win and pay $8.40 as a "good thing".

PURE INDY trained fast at the sales, shows 3 breezes over the Del Mar track, which is a good sign because the west coast clockers rarely record a workout as a breeze and it indicates that the horse worked totally under wraps; may go well at a price in a wide open 2yo sprint...CITZENSHIP debuts for Baffert...MISS SWEET AFLEET debuts for sharp 2yo barn...SECRET MOTIVE ran well in debut.

PRINCESS MALIA left the gate quickly, was taken back to settle in behind the leaders, made a wide bid to get within a length of a fast pace and held okay against a much better field that included promising next out winner Coup; drops in for a tag for a trainer who has excellent numbers off this drop and looks tough to beat...ROCK ON BABY was in the same race as top choice and chased a hot pace, tired; two back she also showed speed in a key race over this course while racing for a higher tag; one to catch...BRIDAL COURT set a pressured pace at this level and held the show in a game effort in turf debut...NEED YOU TONIGHT showed speed in debut, is on the AE's and will get a tough post if she draws in but drops in for a tag for sharp barn and is a threat if in...PLEASANT HYMN made a nice middle-move going longer on dirt and held the place in a career best effort; my feeling is that she prefers dirt but she picks up hot rider and she should benefit turning back off that effort.

PRINCESS MARA (PP) is well bred and makes belated debut at 4 for good barn with leading rider up; Romans does well with firsters for a tag and there's not much to beat here.
JUDICIAL LEADER (PP) will be a very short price looking to win her 4th straight for sharp connections.

Sunday, January 29
Sunday was great. My two best bets at Aqueduct were in the "late double" and they both came in for a COLD $61.50 DOUBLE. But I also had the COLD $41.20 early double with a $19.20 winner in the first race (had the top Diamond Rating). Both longshot winners, the $19.20 in the first and m $15.80 Bombs Away Longshot, Cinnamon Beach, had come off wide trips from outside posts, which is a significant handicapping factor over a track like the inner track, which has tight turns. I will cover these important handicapping angles in a thoroughbred handicapping book that I'm writing which will be published this year.

9). HILL CROSSING*, NECAISE, MACHO MUCHACHO, EVEN FRISKY (1-8-11-6)
BEST BETS: CINNAMON BEACH and HILL CROSSING
CINNAMON BEACH (BAL) was wide the entire way in last and may have bounced off a career best effort in first start over the track two back; may go well at a price on the bounce rebound pattern.
HILL CROSSING (LS) has run some good figures recently and was in tough against razor sharp three-peater Midnite Silver in last; drops and gets good spot, gets a big rider change.

On Saturday I had three Best Bets and they all won (see below). Bluegrass Jet paid $7.00 and we had the COLD $30.40 exacta and the $202.40 trifecta. Then at Aqueduct, both Best Bets won at $3.10 (COLD $10.20 exacta) and $7.00 ($21.40 exacta). My spot plays are showing a monstrous profit so far this year and hitting at a sensational win percentage.

RACE 4
7 | BLUEGRASS JET* | 7-2 LS |
10 | GUNMAN | 4-1 |
11 | SMOKIN STAR | 5-1 |
1 | SIGNATURE EVENT | 6-1 |
BLUEGRASS JET was steadied in tight quarters on both turns in first start in 10 months and only lost by 3 lengths; career best figure came over this course and distance, worked 3 times since last including a nice :48.1 work, draws a better post than the other good closers and can upset rallying off an expected fast pace for good turf trainer Barclay Tagg, who is off to a strong start at the meet...GUNMAN has a late kick and there's a lot of speed in this race...SMOKIN STAR is another that can finish, drops...SIGNATURE EVENT was burned up setting fast paces in last five starts while racing in some tough spots on surfaces that he doesn't prefer, returns to turf and gets a key rider change to a more skilled turf rider, Alex Solis; fits well if he can avoid another speed duel.

I don't think I've eve started a year this hot. Last year in 2011, my Sharphorses Selection Service picks showed a big profit the first 6 months of the year and I've always liked the winter meets. Yesterday my Live Longshot and top pick, Commitment Letter, won easily and paid $14.40 in the 9th race at Gulfstream. The horse fit my Pro Simulcast spot play system, which is the best spot play system ever developed (tested and proven through a large computer database). I've been red hot at Gulfstream. Then at Aqueduct I had two Best Bets and Opening Move won and paid $20.80.

Another huge day for Sharphorses Selection Service on Saturday. We started out with a Live Longshot at Calder which ran second but we had the $48.80 exacta (top 2) and the $217.60 trifecta (top 3). We started with top winner Welchtown ($4.30) in the first race. In the third race, my top pick, Myrlanski, won and paid $38.80 and we had the $207.50 exacta and the $881.00 trifecta, plus the COLD $141.00 Double to our winning Best Bet Quick Recovery ($6.90). On the day at Aqueduct I had 4 winners on top.

CHARDSEY (LS) lacked a rally on dirt but gets hot rider back, adds blinkers, returns to turf for top turf trainer and may be worth a price.
Friday, November 25
Black Friday indeed, as in "in the black!" Below are my picks for Friday, Nov. 25, 2011. Nice day. I had 3 Best Bets on the day and two won ($17.40 and $6.60) and the other one, My Girl Gracie, ran 2nd at Aqueduct but my third pick won and the 2-5 exacta paid $52.80. At Hollywood, top pick and Bombs Away Longshot Baraja De Oro won and paid $17.40 and the 6-3 exacta paid $84.80. At Aqueduct I had full card picks and Best Bets, in the first race the 1-7 exacta paid $131.50, I had an $11 top winner in the 4th, 4 top winners overall at Aqueduct, and the Best Bet Downhill Joey won and paid $6.60.
Wednesday, November 16
One spot play at Hawthorne on Wednesday, Afford won easily and the trifecta paid a nice price of $147.40. On our full card picks at Aqueduct, one of our two Best Bets won and we also had a $23.40 top winner and 3 top winners on the day.

Sunday, July 10
I've been on a hot streak as the Sharphorses Selection Service spot plays continue to show a profit. Last week from Monday through Sunday I had 9 Best Bets and 7 won and paid $16.20, $13.00, $7.00, $5.60, $5.40, $5.00, $3.40. The week before was just as good with winning Best Bets that paid $15.00, $12.40, and $8.60, and a high percentage of winners with several other winning Best Bets.
Below are the picks I gave out Sunday. As you can see, I had two Best Bets, both Live Longshots, and they won and paid $5.60 and $16.20. In the 2nd, Best Bet Schillerette won easily and I had the $19.00 exacta cold. In the 8th, Northern Hammer came off a layoff with a stalking win on turf and paid $16.20.
Saturday, July 9, another good day, two Best Bets, both at Belmont, one (Love Stanza Chance) won and paid $13.00 and I had the $59.00 exacta. Friday, July 8, we had one Best Bet and it won easily and paid $3.40 in a three horse field; also on the Belmont card I had 6 top winners in a row from races 3 through 8. Thursday, July 7, we had two Best Bets at Belmont, one won and paid $5.00 and we had the $18.80 early double Cold. Monday, July 4, both spot plays won (see Recent Winners). Saturday, July 2, both Best Bets at Belmont won. Friday, July 1, we had one Best Bet and it won and we had the cold $18.40 exacta. Thursday, June 30, one of our two Best Bets won and paid $12.40 and we had the exacta and trifecta. Saturday, June 25, we had four spot plays and two won paying $15.00 and $8.60.

NORTHERN HAMMER
NORTHERN HAMMER* (LS) raced in some pretty tough fields as a two year old, returns off layoff for hot barn of Hall of Fame trainer Angel Penna, Jr., who excels with fresh horses and turf horses and everything in between, shortens up to a sprint and may go well at a price in wide open race.

Monday I had two spot plays (besides my full-card Belmont picks), and the both won, completing a COLD DAILY DOUBLE (see below).

beaten favorite over a slow Arlington strip in return; this well bred 4yo
has run much better in his 4 dirt starts and has never been in this light
on dirt; ships in for hot barn and can wire these returning to best
surface…ADARO is dangerous here as he goes turf to dirt and finally
returns to a sprint which is what he is bred for; ran well in lone dirt
start which was over this track, key rival….SOUL OF GOLD drops, cuts
back and can finish fast…HIGH FLYING JAKE goes turf to dirt and makes
first start for a tag.

MAYO takes a key drop, returns to best surface, shortens up…LITTLE BIT
TINY was claimed off a good try, steps up for 35% trainer Amoss who is
lethal off the claim…BELLE MUSE is usually close at this level.

I continue to hit a nice percentage of my Best Bets. Here are Sunday's picks. I had a full-card Belmont picks also but I'm just showing the spot plas to save room. At Hollywood I gave out Winter Blossom, who won by a huge margin impressively and paid $6.00. I also gave out Clinton, who won pretty easily and paid 46.00. In both races I had the exacta listed. At Belmont I had two Best Bets and Drosselmeyer won the One Count and paid $6.90 and I had the $27 exacta and the $62.50 trifecta cold in that race. On Saturday I had Alternation and the cold $42.80 exacta and cold $182 trifecta in the Peter Pan, so I swept both stakes races at Belmont over the weekend, picking the winner, exacta, and trifecta cold in both feature races. OAK FOREST returned off a year layoff, chased a quick pace going two turns in a tough starter allowance race and tired in a fast race won by a runaway winner; drops into a restricted claimer and his last win came on a similar turn back and drop; upset call for high-percentage barn...AVANTI AVANTI comes off back to back top figures at this level and is the one to beat...BIG TEXAS DADDY had the lead against similar and held okay for the show while going a half furlong longer...WINDHAM HILL chased and tired in return, goes turf to dirt and has dangerous speed on best.

RACE 8
10 | SWAGGER JACK*** | 8-1 BAL |
9 | STRAIGHT LINE | 2-1 |
2 | MOONSTOCK | 8-1 |
1 | NINE O WONDERFUL | 8-1 |
SWAGGER JACK dueled for the lead from the rail over a wet track in debut and tired; moves to turf and adds blinkers for a trainer who does well 2nd time out and adding blinkers, is bred for turf on both sides and may go well at a price...STRAIGHT LINE faced winners in England, picks up a top rider and moves into a top turf barn...MOONSTOCK broke slow from post 12 in debut, ran okay; should improve for Hall of Fame connections...NMINE O WONDERFUL ran okay on Polytrack in debut then showed nothing in the same wet track race as top pick but is bred well for turf and can improve.
Saturday, January 22
Saturday I gave out full-card picks at Aqueduct and these three spot plays (below). I had 5 top winners at Aqueduct including an $11 top winner, and the results for the spot plays are below, an $8.60 top winner, a $9.60 top winner that keyed the $46.80 exacta and $267 trifecta, and in the other race at Oaklawn, my top pick tired but a $2 exacta box returned $66.60. So far I'm starting the year great and in 2010 my picks were very consistent and profitable.

RACE 4
7 | TAP ATTACK** | 2-1 |
8 | GREELEY'S LAW*** | 12-1 |
5 | ONE WAY TO ROCK | 3-1 |
TAP ATTACK made a wide middle-move to reach the leader and flattened out, held the show in a top figure effort over the track in first two-turn route; accorded edge in what appears to be a weaker field...GREELEY'S LAW showed gradual improvement but no speed in first three starts then got a big rider change last start but to no avail as he was bumped just past the start and rider C. C. Lopez fell off; rider-less, Greeley's Law then rushed up wide and took the lead on the first turn, bore out down the backstretch to the outside fence and lost his action badly while bucking, dropped way back, got going again and somehow found the rail, then charged home gamely, altered course to go around a horse and finished 2nd behind the winner, although it didn't count because he had no rider. I've hit quite a few longshots off the "big effort by a rider-less horse" over the years. Unfortunately, they move this one up in class from a mdn clm to MSW and he draws a terrible post in a race that starts in front of the turn, but it's a good sign that Lopez sticks...ONE WAY TO ROCK showed speed over a sloppy track in a fine debut, may look to wire them.

Sunday, October 24
Normally I just list some recent winners on this page, but below I have all of the horses that I have out on my regular Sharphorses Selection Service for last week. There were no picks Monday/Tuesday, the picks for Wednesday through Sunday are listed below. This consisted of spot plays and on Saturday and Sunday and I also had my full-card picks at Belmont. This is typical of the consistency of my Sharphorses Selection Service. On spot plays, I gave out 9 horses. 4 of the horses won (44%), 7 of the 9 picks finished 1st or 2nd (78%). The win bets produced a profit of 35% (R.O.I. of $1.35 or 35 cents on the dollar), a win/place bet produced a higher profit of 38%. A $2 exacta box on top two returned a profit of 75% on two exactas ($11.60 and $51.50). Below I listed the results on the spot plays. On the regular weekend Belmont picks I did not list al of the results to save room, but I did show that on Sunday I picked a $55 horse ON TOP and had the Daily Double COLD for $270.00, and Arson Squad was my **Preferred Play on the card. In addition to this, the Boxcar Longshots that I've listed on my free picks page at www.longshotwinners.com for the past few months have also shown flat bet profits. Incidentally, the $55 winner at Belmont Sunday was a Method B system play. I did not list the horse on longshotwinners.com because it was a turf race and for the experiment I have only been using dirt races, but when I handicapped that race, Duke Of Naples was the only Method B qualifier in the race so I put him on top and he won and paid $55.00.

RACE 10
10 | SON OF A GUN* | 5-2 LS |
8 | BOOTLEG FLYER | 7-2 |
11 | SURPRISE STORM | 4-1 |
2 | SUNSHINE SATURDAY | 9-2 |
SON OF A GUN was the favorite in debut last summer, had the rail and flashed sharp speed then was checked and basically taken out of contention in rough trip; returns for outstanding layoff trainer, moves in with statebreds, does not drop in for a tag which is a good sign for a 4yo with only one start, and meets much weaker, upset call...BOOTLEG FLYER chased and held okay in debut at Penn National...SURPRISE STORM has some speed, makes 2nd start for new barn...SUNSHINE SATURDAY adds more speed to the mix.

6 | DA BOOMER* | 7-2 LS 2C |
4 | WOODMANS LUCK | 5-2 |
7 | SHANE DANIEL | 4-1 |
11 | WHAT A RUSH | 15-1 |
DA BOOMER is bred for speed and trained well at the sales, and over this track, lures Pedroza away from a horse (7) that is trained by the leading barn, upset call...WOODMANS LUCK is a one-paced closer, drops back to maidens for hot connections and will be charging...SHANE DANIEL finished gamely for a tag in debut, steps up but faces statebreds for hot barn and rider...WHAT A RUSH is well bred and shows sneaky good works for longshot connections, outside post is not a good spot however
