GUNS OR ROSES (PP) finished 2nd in a key race at Gulfstream in her debut then forced the pace three wide and held the show in her 2nd start, at Saratoga. Stretches out, shows a bullet workout since last, and this Gun Runner filly out of a Tapit mare should appreciate the added distance and likely slower pace of this one mile race. Can wire these for sharp outfit.

MERMAID (LS) sprinted on turf in the first four starts of her career and ran well in all four starts. She was claimed and ran two solid races at Saratoga going two turns against tougher for new barn. She dueled against the bias in a fast pace two starts back and didn't tire that badly and then last start she was hard held early and steadied and ran gamely losing by less than a length -- cuts back to a sprint with a key drop to a $45,000 claiming race.

DAVIDSON, NY bred by American Pharoah, looked good at the OBS sale and sold for $385,000. In her debut going 6 furlongs and look green while getting shuffled back in traffic then made up good ground in the stretch. Based on the OBS sale breeze, she looked to have a pretty long stride and the extra furlong on the stretch to 7 furlongs should help, plus the experience of that first start. She picks up Manny Franco, who won the Saratoga meet.

She moves back into a claiming race...FRIDA broke her maiden in a statebred race over this track in January and has been poorly spotted in her 5 starts since then, three stakes races on dirt and two turf races. She finally gets a realistic spot in a claiming race and also gets back to dirt...SKY OVER KINGSTON was a sharp winner racing for a tag at Tampa Bay in debut; this is tougher but the barn is having a good year and Sammy Camacho rode both of its Gulfstream winners this year.

VEGAS NIGHTCLUB 5 year old mare finally got to the races on May 2, drew the rail, broke slow and was 9th early in a ten horse field, hustled into contention along the inside making up good ground through the middle half of the race to get to within two lengths of the leader, then flattened out in the stretch. She's ranked 1st on "Fraction" on my Formula Pro system, and that's a very good longshot rating in sprints. She should benefit from her debut race and veteran trainer Richard Baltas adds blinkers here. The rail was good in sprints yesterday and speed held well. If she breaks better, she could wire these...BABY NEEDS SHOES has raced 5 times, all on turf. She doesn't have a fantastic turf pedigree so the switch to dirt may be ideal...TURKEY BIRD is a one-paced grinder who has been in too tough; she gets back in a claiming race today and will be passing horses in the final quarter.

TINSELTOWN was claimed for $20,000 at Aqueduct and lacked a rally over a sloppy track on March 5. He's well bred for the distance and synthetic surface and returns off six well spaced workouts for trainer Adam Rice, who has high percentages in several areas, 3 for 4 (75%) with double drops, 43% in maiden claiming races and 32% on synthetic tracks...BAYTOWN ANUBIS ran one of his better races finishing third going 7 furlongs in last at Woodbine...JOBU has been running evenly on turf at Tampa Bay; drops.

RACE 13 

IRON HONOR won his first two starts and earned solid figures, then he had a pretty rough wide trip from post 12 in the Wood Memorial. Several horses that came out of the Wood have improved their speed figures significantly in their next starts, which is a good sign. This colt only lost by 4 and 1/4 lengths in the Wood. They're taking the blinkers off here and I expect that they're going to try and sit behind the speed. Trainer Chad Brown switches to his number 1 rider, Flavien Prat, and his style is to get his horses forwardly placed. I think this horse deserves to be the favorite...NAPOLEON SOLO ran a disappointing return race in the Fountain Of Youth, but then this colt set a quick pace in the Wood Memorial and only lost by 2 and 3/4 lengths. He's a talented speed horse, but the distance is a question mark; one to catch...INCREDIBOLT ran a dull race in his 3yo return but bounced back with a strong finish to win the Virginia Derby, then he ran okay in the Kentucky Derby. He'll be coming on late...OCELLI is still a maiden but he does come off two improved efforts in the Wood Memorial and the Kentucky Derby. In both starts, he earned better figures than his previous races, but he did get good pace set ups in both of those races. He'll be closing...TAJ MAHAL is undefeated in 3 career starts, all over this track. This will be his first start in a Graded stakes race but this isn't the toughest GR1. It's more like a GR2 or GR3 stakes race. They'll have to try and avoid a speed duel as there are a few horses out his outside that will be gunning.

SOUNDBITE (DIRT-LS) has improved as a 4 year old. After winning her first start of the year in January, she was claimed out of that race and ran two good races in $50,000 starter allowance fields including a romping high-figure win at this distance. She then stepped up into a tough allowance race and ran okay behind Malu, who was winning her 5th start, three of which were in non-claiming races. If this race comes off the turf it will be run at a mile which is her best distance. She is very well bred for an off track, and is taking a key drop into a claiming which is restricted to winners of 2 races. I think the main rival is ALWAYS PRACTICAL, who drops for Linda Rice after dueling for the lead here earlier in the month, and also has a good off track pedigree.

Computer Picks Longshots Test - 1

If I have two longshot keys in a race I'll note them 1 and 2 but the preference really doesn't mean much, sometimes the 1 will be preferred because it has more longshot angles, other times it will be because it has much higher odds than the 2nd longshot. For those of you who've followed my computer longshot tests over the years, these current picks are likely to generate a lower win percentage because I'm using several longshot keys. In the past, for instance, I ran some tests when I was developing new systems that focused on early speed type of horses. Some of these horses are early speed types but others aren't. And because the methodology is varied, there are many higher odds horses, horses over 20-1. But, that's what I want for this test. I don't want a high win percentage (which generates lower odds horses). Years ago, probably 20 years ago, there was a website that was putting out longshots every day, usually 20 picks a day, and they were charging $50 a month and if the picks didn't show a profit, they would give you the next month free. Out of curiosity, I subscribed to them. After about six months or so into my subscription they shut down but they had been showing a profit most months and hit many huge longshot winners. I kept the list of horses and studied the results. 

February 17 Note: When picking longshots, the horses behind the longshots are important, especially the 2nd ranked horse, if you're planning on playing exactas (or even trifectas and superfectas). On this test, my underneath horses have done well. Sunday, February 16, for instance, after scratches and cancellations, there were 4 longshots. 3 ran out and 1 finished third. But in all four races the second ranked horse won paying $4.00, $13.20, $5.00, $8.60, and in the 3rd at Oaklawn, the two underneath horses paid $55.60 in the exacta. Monday, February 17, in the 4th at Oaklawn, the longshot ran out but the two underneath horses ran 1-2 and the exacta paid $141.40.

POWER PACE METHOD 

Tests note: This is the test I ran for my Power Pace Handicapping book. The picks were posted on this page prior to the day's races, so it was a "live" test. Results are based on $2 win and place bets and when there are numbers after the top pick, those are used in $2 exacta boxes with the top pick. When the pick does not finish 1st or 2nd I simply list it as "out" because I'm not counting show bets. After 44 days, 71 winners-24%, 113 placed-39% in 293 picks ($582.00), total win return $708.70, place return $559.10, $2.00 Exacta boxes, $528.00 wagered, $559.60.00 returned, exactas paid $255.60, $40.80, $11.40, $15.80, $26.60, $14.80, $14.20, $51.60, $24.80, $97.40, $6.60. Six of the eleven exacta hits were "cold." 

So far, pretty amazing...win and exacta profits and a small loss on place bets. The win percentage is 24%. Considering how many longshots I've hit, the win percentage is superb. High win percentages usually lead to a loss. The hit percentage on the 132, $2.00 exacta boxes ($4.00 per wager) is 8%, 10 exacta hits in 132 boxes. I'm not using traditional past performances at all. I'm only using pace and speed figures, no running lines. Of course, how I'm using these numbers is the key. I'm not looking for the fastest early pace horses, I'm not looking for the highest (fastest) speed figures. 

The first day wasn't that good, although 11 of the 23 horses ran first or second. I picked too many favorites. Second day, I cut down on the amount of favorites and hit the exact same win percentage (22%) but two of the winners paid very good, $58.20 and $11.20. I also had a cold $255.60 exacta. In that race, the two horse looked like a legit favorite that figured to be tough to beat, so I listed the race 8-2, which is what came in. I'm only putting a second horse or third horse when I see obvious horses to use in exacta boxes. 

The third day was exceptional as I hit 3 winners in 8 plays and the win payoffs were $106.20, $12.80, and $11.60, plus two other horses ran second and I hit a $40.80 exacta. It's interesting that I've only played exactas in three races and hit two exactas. 

On Thursday, which was the 4th day, it had 4 winners in 17 picks and a profit of $0.40 cents. 

On Friday, the 5th day, 20 picks, 5 winners and 10 places. No good prices so a loss for the day, although the place bets returned $38.90, a small loss. 

On Saturday, 6th day, 7 picks 2 winners and one ran 2nd, small loss, not bad. 

Sunday, 7th day, 13 picks, 4 winners, 5 placed. Not a bad day, a loss of $0.40 cents. It's

Monday, 8th day, two horses, no winners. In the 6th at Delaware I had a tough choice between two horses, the 5 and the 6, and I went with the 6 because it had better overall speed figures (one of the things I'm using to separate these contenders). Well, the 5 horse won and paid $51.40. So for now on if I'm having a hard time deciding between two horses I'll play both of them if the are 4-1 or higher. If both horses are below 4-1 odds, the bet will be the horse that goes off at higher odds. 

Tuesday, 9th day, 8 picks, 3 winners, all at Parx, all favorites, which produced a loss on win bets, five horses placed which showed a profit, exactas, one hit, a loss of twenty cents. I really don't want to include too many favorites but the horses at Parx yesterday all looked like locks on this system, and they all won. 

Wednesday, 10th day, 8 picks, 3 winners returned $13.40 to win, not a bad loss. Interesting that ion two of the races I listed other horses for exactas and they came in so it's a good sign, when my top pick hits I have a good shot at the exacta. 

Thursday, 11th day, 1 pick, out. 

No picks Friday

Saturday, 12th day, pretty good day, two winners in 9 picks, four places and one of the horses paid $26.40 to place

Sunday, 13th day, winning day. 13 picks two winners that paid $20.20 and $13.00. But favorites did poorly losing at 6/5, 1/2, 7/5 and 9/5. I've got to start listing these with a minimum acceptable odds. 

Monday, 14th day, 4 winning favorites but 8 of the 13 horses placed. Two exacta boxes produced one hit at $26.60. 

Tuesday, 15th day, 7 picks, 2 winners and a small loss, one cold exacta hit of $14.80. 

Wednesday, 16th day, 11 picks and on win bets, two winners and a $21.40 return, another small loss, not bad. When you can get back most of your money in a day of betting, that's good. What worries me is when I bet 11 horses and get nothing back! So far this system has been consistent and not that scary, no wipe-out days. 

Thursday, 17th day, I was pressed for time but I came up with 8 picks at four tracks, two of them won at $9.60 and $5.40, another placed and one exacta hit out of six. Again, a small loss on win bets, not bad. 

Friday, 18th day, 4 winners and one exacta ($51.60) in 18 plays, not a good day. Where's those longshot winners that came early on?

Monday, 19th day, 2 winners in 7 plays including a $14.20 winner and two others ran second, profitable day.

The 2013 Preakness Wrap Up by Bob Pandolfo

I gave out the winner of the Preakness on this page and for my subscribers. Oxbow paid $32.80. My Pace Handicapping Longshots book has a method called the Pace Shape Method and that picked Oxbow to win. I tested the method on this site last year and it showed a big profit. I was dead set against Orb in this race for several reasons. One, he had passed exhausted horses with a dream trip in the Derby. 2) He had never raced inside of horses (always outside). 3). He had not shown what I call "brilliant speed" at any point in any of his races. Orb is a good racehorse but he is not exceptionally fast. To bet him down to 3-5 in that field was ridiculous.  Am interesting side note to the Preakness, I believe the Track Bias helped Oxbow. The Pimlico track was favoring outside closers all day and the rail was dead. The riders were yanking their horses to the 3 and 4 path all day trying to avoid the deep rail. If you watch the replay you'll notice that Gary Stevens raced Oxbow off the rail the entire race then moved him into the 4 path turning into the stretch. Since the jockeys thought that the place to be was rallying wide they all took back to make one run but it back fired when Stevens, a masterful front end rider, slowed the pace down to his liking and stole it. I don't think that this is a strong drop of 3yo's. The fastest horses are all bred for shorter distances and don't want to run long, so the Belmont should be wide open. 

Pandy's Preakness Picks by Bob Pandolfo

RACE 12

I do not agree with many who feel that ORB is a standout here. I actually think this is a wide open race. 

OXBOW was close to the wicked pace in the Kentucky Derby, actually took the lead briefly and finished 6th, the only horse in the race that was close to the pace and didn't finished up the track; this horse fits one of my best Longshot angles (an angle that is explained in my Pace Handicapping Longshots book, which seems to condition a horse for its next start); upset call...WILL TAKE CHARGE beat Oxbow in the Rebel stakes at Oaklawn. The Diamonds did not come up that good for the Oaklawn races, which concerns me, but the track was very slow. This big colt had to check in the midst of his rally last time and the last time he ran poorly over a sloppy track he came back and won the Rebel; rider change to Mike Smith...ORB had a dream setup in the Derby as a horse was uncontrollable on the lead and set a vicious pace, virtually eliminating the horses that were stalking and setting things up for the deep closers. ORB has trained strongly coming out of the race and should go well. The rail makes it interesting since ORB has always rallied wide. This means that Rosario will most likely drop back and try to work his way to the outside which could cause him some traffic problems...GOVERNOR CHARLIE broke the track record for 9 furlongs winning the Sunland Derby and that race produced the best Diamond Rating (96). The track was lightning fast that day but I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the Sunland Derby form. You may remember that Mine That Bird was ranked 2nd on Diamond Ratings coming into the 2009 Kentucky Derby, based on his effort in the Sunland Derby, and he won the Kentucky Derby at 50-1 odds. This horse, GOVERNOR CHARLIE is well bred. He is by Midnight Lute, a champion sprinter. Some people will say that he's bred for speed but Midnight Lute is by Real Quiet, a horse who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness for these same connections, and the pedigree on the dam's side is regal as she is out of two time champion and Hall of Famer, Silverbulletday, a great race mare who won the Kentucky Oaks and Breeders Cup Juvenile. GOVERNOR CHARLIE trained poorly after the Sunland win so Baffert skipped the Derby but he has trained much sharper since then and he has improved in all three of his starts.
